Writer's Block

I really have nothing going on. Janine and I (mostly Janine) has been working hard getting ready to put us in a house. I just wanted to say I'm very proud of her hard work. She's been awesome. We are looking at a really nice house and hopefully soon, I'll be blogging from there! That's all for now. Writer's block has won. I promise content soon. Please stay tuned. I have something very exciting coming up this Sunday. So come back then, you hear?!

More Comments

I always wanted comments in my Tumblr account. It's not like I get a ton of comments, but I've always felt that things posted especially on blogs should be open for conversation. Thanks to the guys again at Disqus, my mobile site is now interactive. I cannot recommend them enough for updating and organizing comments and for creating a community out of that interaction. www.disqus.com - Disqus http://ping.fm/nGdiO - My Mobile Blog

Fascinating Tornado Pic

Image
This frightening but awe inspiring shot was taken in NW Iowa last week. It shows the power and size of these tornadoes that have wreaked havoc in the Midwest this week. Here's the original article. I just remember living in the Midwest in the lat 90's that this time of year is so volatile and at any minute you can hear those sirens and have to run into the basement. My thoughts are with everyone down there!

Firefox Download Day

Image
If there is one recurring theme on my blog it's for people to download Firefox . With Internet Explorer finally catching up to safety and to internet standards, I have not banged this drum quite as much or quite as loud. I also was not happy with Firefox version 2. It took a lot more memory, it crashed a lot more, and the basic features were just...boring. But now comes version 3. I have been beta testing the new Firefox and giving input where I could and I believe that this product has made a complete 180 from the previous version. I am again banging that drum and asking that everyone take a few minutes to download the Firefox browser (set up is real easy) and start enjoying the new features right away. The new browser has a much better bookmarking system including tagging which adds another dimension to those who have a lot of favorite sites. The platform has completely changed so development has increased almost as it was when it first rolled out. The best part about Firefox has

Men's Listening Skills

A man was sitting on the edge of the bed, observing his wife, looking at herself in the mirror. Since her birthday was not far offhe asked what she'd like to have for her Birthday. 'I'd like to be six again', she replied, still looking in the mirror. On the morning of her Birthday, he arose early, made her a nicebig bowl of Lucky Charms, and then took her to Six Flags theme park. What a day! He put her on every ride in the park; the Death Slide, the Wall of Fear, the Screaming Monster Roller Coaster, everything there was. Five hours later they staggered out of the theme park. Her head was reeling and her stomach felt upside down. He then took her to a McDonald's where he ordered her a Happy Meal with extra fries and a chocolate shake. Then it was off to a movie, popcorn, a soda pop, and her favorite candy, M&M's. What a fabulous adventure! Finally she wobbled home with her husband and collapsed into bed exhausted. He leaned over his wife with a big s

Geeky Father's Day 2008

I have gone on and on about my Dad since I started this blog. It's still my opinion that he is the most rugged, yet engaging, caring, and devoted person that I'll ever know. I've mentioned before several times about his rough upbringing in post depression Virginia. He has always had to struggle and fight for what he's gotten out of life, yet he's very happy with what he does have. It's a lesson to us all to embrace the good things that we have in life and accept the hand that we're given. A lot of times that's not a bad deal if we really really think about it. There's a new twist to my old man now. I thought about what I was going to send to him for Father's Day this year and I decided to give him a gift certificate to Amazon.com . Now some people might read over that and not really think about what was said, but let's remember who is receiving a gift card from an internet retailer. My Dad! Over the past few months he's become quite the g

A Flood of Memories

Image
I recently noticed that Google Street View had covered the Virginia Beach area. I let my Father know which mostly involved showing him remotely how to navigate the map, how to type in addresses, and what it means to "drag and drop", but once we were up and running I got taken for quite the ride! First up was my birthplace, I remember when I was little thinking that I lived in a nice big house, but when I revisit this house almost 35 years later, I realize that it either shrunk considerably or it just wasn't that big to begin with. In this picture there actually are two expansions, one on each side..so this place was a lot smaller. I now know why my parents moved so quickly after having my brother. I used to play on the driveway for hours with my tricycle. I remember the hurricane that dropped the willow tree out back on the house. I remember so many things all the sudden just by looking around at the neighborhood. I remember the lady across the street's name was Jean

You Should Laugh More

There once was a young couple who lived in a town filled with crime. After three neighbors' houses had been robbed, the couple decided to get a guard dog. So one day the wife went to the pet store and said, "I need a good guard dog." And the clerk replied, "Sorry, we're all sold out. All we have left is this little Scottie dog. But he knows karate." The wife didn't believe him so he said to the dog, "Karate that chair." The dog went up to the chair and broke it into pieces, then he said to the dog, "Karate that table." The dog went up to the table and broke it in half. So the wife bought the dog and took it home to her husband who was expecting a big guard dog. But then she told her husband that it knew karate, and he said "Karate my ass!"

Social Networking in the Air

Image
The desktop application environment took a big step forward with the recent release of Adobe's Air application. Adobe Air enables desktop applications to deliver web content for everything from live stock tickers to eBay. For the sake of this post, however, I'm just going to post about AIR apps and social networking. There are a few handy apps out there available for those who have taken the plunge into the world of Twitter, Pownce, Jaiku, etc. Here's a short list of apps that I have used, what I find useful and what I find lacking. Alert thingy is an application that connects users to Friendfeed, but it can also be used for Twitter, Flickr, etc. Pros: Allows me to Tweet, post to Flickr, shorten a URL with tinyurl, and provides an easy interface for Friendfeed.Drag and drop images easily. Cons: Interface seems lacking. It does what it's supposed to do, but something about the app seems, plain. The Pownce application is a simple to use extension of their network. Pros

Thank You Note

I wanted to leave a quick note for those checking my blog this weekend: Thank you. We've all become an under appreciated society, be it at work, home, pretty much everywhere, there are times when the proper gratitude is not given out. I wanted to just take a second and thank all my readers. I sometimes lament that I do not have greater numbers, but I'm just reminded to be glad and embrace my audience no matter what the size. So a big thank you. I really appreciate the time spent on my site. I appreciate the feedback too. You are all awesome!

Neph Fu

Image
Ethan, who is trained in Tiger style Kung Fu starts this spar with a left palm to Ian's cheek. This move throws his opponent off balance leaving him open for further attack. However, Ethan underestimates the power and speed of his younger and smaller twin. Ian while off balance, uses his drunken milk boxing style (with a little Praying Mantis thrown in) to land a crushing right hook to his brother's thick and well padded head. Both warriors then agree to a temporary truce for additional feedings, changings, and naps. Until next time, young grasshoppers...

Blogs..

..are very hard to write. Just looking at my blog alone, the themes, the message, the content of the blog has changed consistently every couple months since it began in 2004. Originally, I just posted thoughts, then I posted about my music, then I blogged more about the geeky side of Mike, then I did a hodgepodge, then I tried to put things in categories. Despite the pains, however, this has all been worth it all. I've learned so much. I have learned to really think things out. It's made me a more careful person. It's broadened my horizons. I've even learned to spell better, which I never thought would happen. So there is no point to this post other than really recommending that everyone work on their blogs, join Twitter or any number of social networks, and have fun with it. The worst thing that could happen is that more horizons are broadened...with the help of a vehicle to carry my thoughts from my mind to my hands and then to the world.
