Who Doesn't Love Oatmeal

Image
This is a two bird one stone post. Well, three actually, but I'm too tired to count that high: I wanted to post something for today, I wanted to plug a site worthy of an RSS subscription, and I wanted to send out some congratulations to the writer. We've all at least thought of doing it... The Oatmeal  is a web comic and updated by Matthew Inman. His hilarious take on life's annoyances won me over long ago. Today Tumblr (which I've mentioned recently) agreed to take one of his comics and use it for their 503 page. So if (or when) Tumblr goes down, people will see one of his drawings. So kudos and long live The Oatmeal..... ......by subscribing, and checking out his book which comes out soon. Linkage: The Oatmeal Wikipedia The Oatmeal

Theft.bin

I know I've posted this picture before. Probably when talking about my forever saga moving leaves every fall. There's something in this picture though that is missing now. Want to take any guesses? I woke up this morning, got up and headed out. While backing up, I looked over my shoulder to see where the trash bin was located. I put it on the street for pick up the other night. It wasn't freaking there! Some ghetto, redneck, knuckle dragging, slacker dipstick targeted my dumpster. It's possible it was lifted because it had less garbage in it then the rest of the cans on my street. My first thought was maybe the county claimed it for a late bill or my can was getting replaced, but it's a pretty new can. So I called and ordered a replacement, but what a stitch. Here's my tweet which will will assuredly afflict these thieves with various skin and body disorders. I will have justice! Bahhahaha! To the redneck who stole our trash bin this morning, may

Oscar Winning Role of a Razzie Life

Image
It is award season and this is as close as I'll ever get to posting anything about celebrities. I remember posting a couple years ago on Pownce a short list of actors that I'd like to portrait yours truly if my life was ever made into a movie. Outside of that being one of the worst potential movies ever made it would need some serious acting power to make my life pop. Here is my updated short list from least likely to most, but anyone would agree this is a formidable list.  I do not insist they look like me, at all, as you'll see, it's mannerisms, style, humor, intensity that landed these five poor saps below: Why Macy, Mike? Well, that's an easy one.  He fits into any role and blends into the background perfectly. Sean Astin has played parts as an effeminate hobbit and big hearted linebacker. I added Astin after watching his short stint on 24. His drive for organization along with the  occasional careless mistake ultimately became his downfall. I saw myself for

Showing Some Mobility

Image
I mulled for years moving my blog to platforms such as Wordpress. After some testing, I decided to stay with Blogger. Part of it is laziness, yes, but it's the features that keep me here. I could always make things simpler with a Tumblr blog or stick with my Posterous, but this is too rich and full of a blogging platform to leave. Another reason I stick around is their recent addition for mobile support.  Blogger in Draft  posted last month the addition for mobile templates. Now when looking at my blog online, it has a snazzy new look. I'm sure it will become more customizable with time, but the default template looks great. Do check it out and let me know how it looks. This is original by no means, but it helps complete this experience for me. I feel all high tech. There's even a QR code for my site which I still find utterly fascinating.

Needing Laughter

Image
This has to have been one of the most intense weeks of my working life. I needed a good laugh so I dug through into my subscriptions and found something that's been around for a while. Garfield - Garfield is a clever strip which simply removes Garfield the cat out of his own comic. What's left is Jon Arbuckle, occasionally Odie, and hilarity. Lasagna! Link: Garfield Minus Garfield

Overwhelmingly Houred Out

My inbox was stacked pretty high today! Actually we're doing some necessary hardware upgrades. A run on milk? There must be flurries a'coming! This slow cooker full of pulled pork barbecue will get me through! The welcoming party did not have to get up. Must be tough...

Twitter Un-Tools

Image
For many, Twitter has become a regular part of their social diet. There are many tools and services which take advantage of a pretty decent and lately reliable API. For some it is important to maintain their friends and followers. I want to focus on two services that I use to do just that. Justunfollow is a valuable resource for me to manage users who do not find me fascinating and worth following. Once logged in, I'm given the options to see unfollowers or fans. I pretty much use this site to manage the unfollowers. A recent addition is the feature to white list some which I don't mind following without the equal reciprocation. There is a limit of 50, but for their work and if one feels it's important enough, they have a full version for $4.95 a year.  For me a big part of social networking is networking. Unless I'm following a news account or a really fascinating public figure, I've always seen Twitter friending in one way: If a person does not feel the need t

Local Tech

Image
This is a big time feel good story for me. I've always felt envious about the Silicon Valley and New York City where a vast majority of tech companies call home. I never thought that Richmond would be home to anything remotely close to new tech, social networking, etc. Tumblr has announced that they are going to open a second office here in Richmond. Tumblr is a great micro blogging platform which has great social features. I have a couple pages, but mostly I've used it for feeding information. That may change now that there's a possibility that I can now support a local company. I think this is exciting news! I hope more companies see the rapid growth of the social space in central Virginia, the lower taxes (compared to NY and CA), and an active community ready to embrace this new media. I think I'm going to have to re think how I use my own Tumblr account now. If you're on there, let me know who you are. Here's a shot of the inside of the Corrugated Bo

Busy Times Ahead

Image
I really tried to post something last night. I had nothing. It's not that there's nothing going on, it's just all work related. I prefer not to post about my work here. Nothing bad happening, we are making a lot of major upgrades which involve my expertise over the next couple weeks. We're getting new hardware, new software, a lot of shiny new-ness. Other than that, there really isn't anything going on, just your typical January slowdown after the holidays. I'm thinking I'll be singing three tunes over the next several months, work, gym, and home. So I don't expect much personally, over the next few days and weeks. I think I'll stick to posting on new gadgets and apps especially in light of this week's Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas. Looks like I'll have a very nice birthday this year!

Moshing Penguin

I saw and retweeted this earlier, but I figured it was worth its own post. After all, penguins love the metal. H/T @apeshit

CR-48 Running Android

Image
I didn't have much to post. This has been and will be a very busy week at work. Actually it will probably be a very busy month for me at work, but it's all very good and I'm very excited to be this tired. From @hexxeh and posted here , not only have people been able to port OS X and Windows 7 to the Google laptop, but apparently now Android is running on it. I would greatly enjoy a dual boot or more. I can't wait to see what people do with these devices.

Lights, Camera, Android Camera Apps

I wanted to quickly share the camera apps that I use on my phone. iPhone doesn't get to have all the fun with their great Flickr and Instagram apps. There are a few on our platform too which are fun and easy to use. FxCamera for Android on AppBrain FX Camera has several layering options with pictures. For example you can use the Polaroid or fish eye effects. It's a very basic app that does all of this with pretty decent efficiency. Camera 360 for Android on AppBrain Camera 360 works the same way that FX Camera works. It has a few more unique effects and the pro version provides more. Retro Camera for Android on AppBrain Retro Camera has 4 cool effects but what makes this app stand out is that the effects are accessed via 4 cameras. I used this for my Halloween post. This also has widget support, and out of all of these camera apps, I have the most fun using this one. picplz for Android on AppBrain Picplz has quickly become a favorite of mine. This app most closely r

Holiday Trippin'

Image
I must like to stretch out the holidays. This morning, we departed for my parents for the exchanging of gifts and to enjoy some much needed quality time. Plus I really enjoy the mini road trip in our new ride. I always enjoy spending the day with my parents. I never thought I'd enjoy heading back to the Northern Neck, but now that I'm an adult and not a wily teenager, I can appreciate the quiet beauty and close knit community that I took for granted so long ago. I got to take Janine back into Sharps to show her some of the old houses I used to visit when I was younger. It's bittersweet to see some houses still standing while some have been long abandoned. I don't want that area to become a ghost town. There's vital early history in that part of Virginia that not many get to see. In the photo is the current local hunt club. Before that it was the old Tidewater post office. It ceased being a post office long before my time. Growing up I mostly remember it being

2011 Initial Thoughts

As 2011 begins, I spend the day reflecting on the past year and thinking ahead for the new year. I never keep resolutions, I prefer to call it advanced planning. There's a stigma that comes with making resolutions. I can swear I'll go to the gym, be a more charitable person, vow to write a book, or learn a new language. I usually don't follow through. I think it's the American way. I do plan to be married and a student though by this time next year. I can think of no better direction to stay on my continued path to contentment. This can be a good year and I plan on doing my best to make that happen. Best wishes to everyone as they continue on their paths, may you all get there as well.
