And On That Note

Image
It is that time again. Every four years social media degrades into that wasteland of rhetoric and I get to a point where I decide, instead of confronting everyone for their opinions, I just bow out for a few months. In 2008, when Pownce was still around and I was a heavy user there, I did the same thing. I said TTFN to the good friends I had there and on Twitter. This time around, I disconnect myself from Google Plus, Twitter, and most anything with a feed outside of real news. With a wedding coming up in October, endless loads of house work, and real friendships that need to be tended to, this will come as a worthwhile break. I even suggest others do the same. Just the same as most people avoid the internet completely on April the 1st, I believe for the sake of preserving sanity a two month vacation is a great idea. So from the safe and comfortable distance of my blog, I bid those adieu until the day comes where reasonable discourse abides (which will never happen) or until Nove...

Apple Hubris May Pop That Bubble

Image
I published an editorial on RootzWiki earlier this morning (go take a look ), but I had another thought that I wanted to post here. On Friday, a jury awarded Apple at least 1.4 billion dollars with the potential for nearly a 4 billion dollar payout during final stages of this trial. The trial, which went on for months was decided by this jury in roughly 36 hours. The jury essentially determined up front that yes, Samsung had copied trade dress designs from Apple and infringed on a few patents which in turned caused the jury to decide with prejudice against any of Samsung's claims. I don't want to focus on the trial itself, the lackluster job Samsung's attorneys did in expressing their case, nor do I want to talk about how this award for Apple affects Android. All of that is being discussed ad-naseum by smarter people than me on other tech blogs. What I wanted to focus on is the new Apple and how the reputation that they are creating are going to affect them in correlat...

RIP Neil Armstrong

Image
I was born well after the lunar missions, so I was not privy to the awe inspiring moments when US Astronauts walked on our moon. We were all inspired though as kids to look up to the sky and listen to that inner desire to reach for the stars. We watched with great enthusiasm the birth and death of the Space Shuttle program. With the Mars rover Curiosity landing a couple weeks ago, that was all rekindled for us. I have always believed we need a well funded and goal oriented space program here in the United States. While paroosing through the aisles at my local grocery store this morning, I heard that Neil Armstrong had passed at age 82. He will forever be known as the first man that step foot on the moon and we all will forever remember his brave steps and memorable quotes as he walked on the surface of Earth's lone satellite. I am sad to hear his passing, but today we remember and celebrate the hard work of the Apollo teams, the crews on earth, NASA as they continu...

I Have Been Unrolling

Image
I am an inbox zero fanatic. Maybe not specifically with Merlin Mann's methods, but with the concept of not having emails cluttering my inbox. I'm probably so fanatical about not having anything in my GMail account, psychologists would probably find reasons to worry. It's really just OCD though, I swear. I just see it as one thing in life where I can have God like control. Lately, however, it has become more difficult to stay on top of emails. There's Groupon, social network notifications, Living Social Deals, and now Amazon local deals on top of Google Offers, sales reminders, and so on. I'm up to my eyes in deals that I never use. If I need a deal, I know where to go and find them. Not only that, services that I signed up for years ago are now deciding to send me newsletters. I started to feel like I was losing my God like controls. I'm not feeling my inner Zeus. Unroll.me is an interesting service that helps users unsubscribe from those types of email...
