George would have never used his Twitter account I follow a few well thought out liberal and conservative pundits. I also follow a few that fly off the seats of their pants. They get paid, through the magic of the Internet, to talk about politics. There is a space for political speech. The United States and most of the civilized western world thrive because we're not jailed (for the most part) for speaking our minds. I'm only partially going to be referring to those people, but this is really for the rest of us. I've long ago learned to tune out of the vitriol that is their livelihoods. This has become probably one of the harder times to hold a reasonable debate on issues of the day. Not only are we confined by the walls of social media, but by an amazing renewed tactic. Many years ago, when Europeans discovered a new world, a golden age of commerce sprang up like never before seen. The Spaniards hit the gold mine, literally, the French found luxurious furs, and the British found their next cash crop, tobacco. With wealth growing at a fever pitch, a scourge began to grow within the seas. Pirates. Pirates were a criminal element that used brains, muscle, and speed to find any weak link within the inter-sea commerce trade. They accomplished this by ripping off ships, ravaging port towns, and creating overall fear and havoc. With the passage of time, better technologies, and stiffer penalties, piracy as it was known in the 16th century slowly died out. It exists even to this day, but that is another topic for a different time. My school year always began the day after Labor Day and apparently for millions of kids, that trend continues to this day. This year however starts in controversy. Tomorrow morning all public school children at the beginning of the school day will watch a 30 minute video from our President advising them to work hard and pay attention. It's also sad I had to find the text of the speech on Fox News' web site. If it's on the other news sites, it's was very hard for me to find. Now all this always sounds great on paper, but with everything, politics has to rear it's ugly head. Let me be clear: I do not have a problem myself with the President speaking to these children, I think it's fantastic. The issue to me isn't his speech, but the lack of educating being done by public school teachers. I don't get on my political soapbox very much and mostly because my circle of friends and I don't agree much in this realm. I've always been a 'live and let live' kind of person especially when dealing with such a dirty and unfair topic. No one at this point really knows why Sarah Palin has stepped down at this point. There could be looming political scandal, she could just be a quitter, she may have aspirations to run for federal office and need to begin the daunting task of unseating someone who knows he can do no wrong by 60% of our population at any time. As I watched with the world the overwhelming yet smooth transition today involving the most powerful political chair on the planet, I thought about what my comments and thoughts should be about this historic day. I was reminded of the outpouring of the democratic process when millions of people voted perhaps for their first time. I thought about the people that have bled and died to deliver to all of us that ability to vote and that ability to transfer power without overthrow. But one thought stuck out more than any other. Now, more than ever, as I mentioned after the elections, we all need to do more to participate in our government. I honestly don't know a soul that can tell me who their representatives are much less how often they interacted with these civil servants. I spent the day thinking up creative alternate names to Election Day this year. Along with the post title, I came up with "National Stand in Line Day", because of not only facing long lines at the polls, but at the Starbucks to get that free cup of coffee or to Ben and Jerry's to get that free scoop of ice cream. I also thought of "Rain Day", because as long as I can remember, it's rained on Election Day, especially Presidential election days, which leads me to believe that Nature is not too fond of lines either. I was well prepared for rain myself, but lucky for me, the voting booths were inside this year. The local news reporters kept insinuating that I was going to be outside and standing in the rain to vote. So what are my thoughts on today? Things are really getting heated with the election coming in just over a month. One would think with everything going on, social networks would be a resource for collecting information, and discussing ideas and topics. One would think that people would practice restraint and tolerance with various opinions. One would thing wrong. Social networks have an obvious bias and little room for tolerance for ideas outside of their own. I don't think I've ever seen so much snide, snarky, and outright mean posts and comments. On top of that, the trolling has gotten out of control. To say I'm disappointed with the state of social media would be a pretty fair understatement. The problem with the big conversation is that most people have already made up their minds and nothing is going to change that decision. The same applies to me. There has been way too much media coverage over soon to be former New York Governor Elliot Spitzer's involvement in a prostitution ring. This kind of coverage is normally reserved for other politicians (you know...Republicans) that think they are above the law and preform acts and break laws that they are sworn to uphold. Honestly they deserve the attention they receive and then some for the sheer hypocricy alone. But... Spitzer (D), is a victim to the system. The New York Democrat is probably hoping that with the passing of time, people will calm down and let him get back to his job of coddling and caring for us. There's a powerful force that carried Mike Huckabee to victory in Iowa Thursday Night. I'm sure it's hard to miss it from this shot. I hear a lot, especially on the web, how Pres. Bush is the worst President ever. I don't think a day goes by whenever scanning the political feeds that I see some kind of story with those words. I don't see as much the words, " Worst Congress Ever ". Looking at these numbers, a lot of people sure feel that way. Must be a lot of bias around if that's not pasted on every political board on the web and on the TV at least 6 or 7 times a day. So, Congress, you stink, don't get too comfortable in that office. So sayeth a whole lot of people, I guess. Maybe I should do polls. I'll be sure to only call during dinner and naptimes.

My goodness. It looks like hell has frozen over. Gas is steadily increasing and will probably hit four dollars a gallon by the end of summer in Virginia. The Dallas Mavericks, the top rated seat in the NBA Western Division, knocked out by the lowest ranked Golden State Warriors. The weather has been a roller coaster of extremes, one day posting over 90 degrees, the next, barely 60 degrees. The stock market, which 5 years ago was looking very bleak, is posting record highs. People are getting paid less to do more and expected to accomplish wealth, people have to be either incredibly lucky or incredibly crooked. Extremists are undermining our efforts to bring Democracy in Iraq in the name of holy war. Okay , nothing sounds too shocking, until I wake up and find out that a conservative won the Presidential election in France. You have got to be kidding me!
